About seven miles from the bridge to Hilton Head, Rose Hill Plantation is located off both sides of Highway 278 in Bluffton. Originally inhabited by the Yemassee Indian tribe, the Plantation itself was owned by Sir John Colleton, and in the 19th century was a working plantation producing Indigo and cotton. The mansion has kept its beauty to this day. There are 988 homes and sites in Rose Hill. In this 1,700-acre private community, approximately two-thirds of the residents live on the “golf course side” and the remaining live on the “estate” or “equestrian side.” In addition to equestrian amenities, Rose Hill offers 3 swimming pools, 2 hard tennis courts, a boat ramp and dock, and a meeting center.
